FOOD INFO
Turkey Dinner Package Instructions
- Preparation: Keep your turkey cool until you are ready to cook it. It is seasoned and prepared for the oven. If it gets too warm, the butter may melt off before cooking.
- Pre-Heating: Preheat your oven to 350°F (adjust as needed based on your oven).
- Cooking: Loosely cover the turkey with foil and place it in the oven. Use the rule of approximately 13 minutes per pound for a whole thawed turkey. For example, a large turkey of roughly 18 lbs will take about 3.9 hours, while a smaller turkey of approximately 12 lbs will take about 2.6 hours.
- Basting: Feel free to pull the turkey out and quickly baste it.
- Crispy Skin: Remove the foil during the last 15 minutes or a bit longer for crispy skin.
- Temperature Check: Do not cook the turkey past 165°F. Use a thermometer to check the thickest part of the breast and/or thigh, ensuring you do not touch the bone. Pull the turkey out at around 155-158°F; the carry-over cooking will bring it up to 165°F.
- Resting: After removing the turkey from the oven, cover it with foil and let it rest for at least 20 minutes before carving. This will ensure easy cutting and juicy meat.
- Carving Tips: Pull all dark and remaining white meat off with gloves for better yield versus serving whole legs and thighs after slicing the breast. If you see blood by the thigh or pink in the breast, quickly heat it in the microwave. (This should not happen.)
- Cooked Bird or Breast: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Heat the covered turkey or breast tightly to 165°F for approximately 35 minutes, considering that ovens will vary. Let it rest, then slice. Remember, this is turkey dinner, not sandwiches, so cut the breast meat a bit thicker to retain juiciness and serve better.
Side Dishes
- General Tips: All sides are pre-cooked and need to be heated. If you time things right, they can go in the oven right before or after pulling the turkey. When pressed for space, you can set your grill to 350°F (on one side), place a sheet pan on the grates, and use it as an indirect heat oven.
- Mashed Potatoes: Heat to 160°F for approximately 35 minutes, or transfer to a microwave-safe bowl and microwave, stirring halfway through.
- Gravy: Transfer to a microwave-safe serving utensil and microwave.
- String Bean Casserole: Cover with foil and heat in the oven for approximately 35 minutes. Remove the foil in the last five minutes, and sprinkle extra onions.
- Sweet Potato Casserole: Cover with foil and heat for 35-40 minutes, removing the foil in the last few minutes to sprinkle marshmallows to taste (we like a lot) and brown them, being careful as they will brown fast.
- Mixed Vegetables: Cover with foil and heat for approximately 35 minutes.
- Rolls: Rolls can be served as is or brushed with butter or olive oil and heated for 5 minutes.
- Cranberry Sauce: Put in a serving bowl.
